Baptism Requirements for children less than 7 years old
Baptism is the first Sacrament that is received, and it is to be given with the hope that the child will be brought up in the Catholic faith. Parents and godparents take on this responsibility as they present a child for baptism.
The following are the policies for baptism:
PARENTS
- The parents must be registered in St. Patrick parish. If they are from another parish, they are to present a letter of permission from their pastor.
- Both parents and the godparents are required to attend a baptism class, ideally before the child is born. The class is valid for two years.
- If parents have taken a baptism class in another parish, they are to present a letter from that parish attesting to their attendance within the past two years.
GODPARENTS
- Godparents are required to attend a baptism class. They may attend the class in their home parish if they are not able to attend at St. Patrick.
- Godparents from other parishes are required to submit the Sponsor Form signed by the pastor of their home parish. This form attests to their attendance at a baptism class, and also their eligibility to be sponsors.
- Godparents are to be practicing Catholics, regularly attending Mass, at least 16 years of age, having received the Sacrament of Confirmation and if married, married Sacramentally in the Catholic Church.
- If there is more than one godparent, they are to be one male and one female. If they are a married couple, they are to have been married in the Catholic Church.
- Parents may not serve as godparents.
CHRISTIAN WITNESS
- A baptized Christian who is not Catholic may act as a Christian witness along with a Catholic godparent.
The Sacrament of Baptism may be celebrated within Mass (except during Lent), after Mass on weekends, or on designated Saturdays.
It is customary for the family to give a baptismal offering to the priest or deacon on the day of the baptism.
